Zoom Alternatives

As our Kaltura service has struggled to allow you to upload and access your content – we’d like to suggest some short-term alternatives. It’s our hope that Kaltura is fully operational/reliable very soon, and we can continue to work with normal workflows. But until then, here are some scenarios that might apply to you.

I Record to Cloud in Zoom and use Kaltura to Deliver Those Recordings

We would advise that, in the short term, you use the Zoom Cloud Recording link directly from Zoom. You can place that link right in your Blackboard course. The link will expire in 30 days, but should get us past the immediate Kaltura issues.

Step-by-step to share in Blackboard

  1. Login to KU Zoom Video Conferencing (Sign In with KU Online ID)
  2. Click on Recordings button
  3. Click on link name of the recording.
  4. Choose the “view” (gallery, speaker, etc) that you’d like to share, hover over it.
  5. Click on the link button (chain icon). This will copy a shareable link to your computer’s clipboard.
  6. Go to Blackboard
  7. Click on Content Area where you’d like to share recording
  8. Select Build Content --> Web Link
  9. Name your link in “Name” field. Paste the copied Zoom address into the URL field
  10. Click Submit

I Upload Video Files to Kaltura/MediaHub for Sharing

If your facing uploading difficulties or can not wait for the inordinately-long upload times, we would advise a temporary alternative hosting location for your video.

  • If your course is using Teams, consider using the “Stream” application in Teams, upload a video to it, and make it available to your course’s Team.
  • You could also upload a video file to your OneDrive space, and share a link from there – note, that while you can decide between limit access to your link to specific people or to “anyone,” you can’t restrict users who have access from downloading of your file. And we know some instructors don’t want their video content downloaded.
  • While we know there are plenty of other options, our staff won’t be recommending YouTube uploads (for instance), as there are plenty of Terms of Service issues that you should consider with your instructional content.

I Use Kaltura Capture to Create Screen Recordings for Sharing

The easiest screen recording alternative would be to use your Zoom license. Open a meeting room with just you in it, start a Cloud recording, and start Presenting. When complete, your recording will be available in the Zoom Cloud (for temp link sharing, like above), and also transferred to Kaltura.
